Dear Menlo Park,
Serving on the Menlo Park City Council has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I have been privileged to work alongside dedicated colleagues, passionate residents, and caring staff who are committed to the betterment of our city.
After heartfelt reflection, I am announcing my decision not to seek re-election for the Menlo Park City Council. Next summer, following the conclusion of my current term, both professional commitments and personal circumstances will necessitate my relocation from our wonderful community.
One of the highlights of my tenure has been fostering civic engagement in the city. Whether through my office hours at Woodside Bakery, visits with school classrooms and Scout troops, canvassing door-to-door on local issues, or participating in community events, I have cherished every opportunity to connect with Menlo Park neighbors to listen, learn, and share how folks can make a difference locally. I’m eager to continue engaging with residents of all ages in the coming months.

My time in this role has reinforced the importance of local government in making meaningful changes that have both local and national impacts. It has also shown me how vital local advocates and grassroots organizations are in creating change.
Being the youngest City Councilmember in Menlo Park’s history and the first renter to represent District 5 meant I had different perspectives to contribute to the Council. It’s affirmed to me that who represents us matters and that the perspectives of diverse local leaders are critical to ensuring a representative democracy. I am confident that my public service journey will continue after I leave Menlo Park.
My dedication to our city remains unwavering. Through the rest of my term, I will continue to serve with the same thoroughness and investment I have strived to bring since day one. My focus will remain on addressing our community's priorities, especially improving street safety, advancing sustainability and climate action, and making our city a vibrant, healthy, and inclusive place for all residents.
In my final months on the City Council, I will work diligently to ensure that ongoing projects are on solid footing and that the future incoming Councilmember is well-prepared to take on the responsibilities of this position. If you, or someone you know, is interested in running for District 5, please reach out. I would be happy to offer my insights and questions to help determine if the role is right for you.
To the people of Menlo Park and especially to those in District 5, thank you for your openness and support. It has been a privilege to represent you and work on your behalf.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve this extraordinary community!
Sincerely,
Maria
Maria Doerr
District 5 Councilmember
City of Menlo Park
